I would be lying if I told you that I remember every detail of the day that changed my life. The thing is, at that point I didn’t know that if would be the morning that would get me through the rest. Since I don’t remember it minute by minute, I will tell you what I do remember.
It was a very cold fall morning. Looking around, there were marshmallows walking around, kids bundled up in layers of sweaters and coats. I rushed inside the band room and was hit with a wall of warmth, music, and laughter. What a morning, I thought, what a morning. I slowly made my way across the room and as I peered over to the piano, it was already set up. Sitting at the stool was a shy, brown-haired girl. She looked lost in a way and was anxiously looking around.
When I arrived I nervously introduced myself and she quietly replied. The rest of the class period was a blur. We ran through warm-ups and practiced our songs for the winter concert. The bell rang and everyone went separate ways.
From that day forward, every morning the piano girl and I grew closer. We started hanging out after school and had many great times together. Movies and the mall, roller coasters and reading, masterpieces and musicals, photography and our perfect dreams, all filled those joyous years. It was through those experiences that I got to know her, and we became very close. By the time freshman year rolled around, we were sisters.
Freshman year was when things went down hill for both of us. There were family relationship problems, communication problems, and emotional issues. All of a sudden everything turned up side down. In the midst of all the chaos, which still exists today, there was one person who always stood tall, waiting for me after the disheveled earth had settled. It was she who got me through all the tough times, it was she who held my hand when there was nobody else there, it was she who kept me going everyday. She is my sister. There is no way to describe the wonders she has done for me and how much she has changed my life. I don’t believe in miracles, but if I did I would say: She is the miracle that on that cold fall morning I didn’t know I needed or would get. The miracle that gave me my life back.
The moral of the story: Relationships may come and go but friendship is forever. You may not be able to choose your family, but when you are lucky enough to have that opportunity, it will change your life. So always hold on to the ones you love because you never know when something will happen that will make you need them. There are always opportunities, looming around corners, which let you experience the feeling of realizing how lucky you are to have the people you care about most in your life.
